This module provides an overview of Additive Manufacturing technologies and their applications

This module aims to establish a basic understanding of Additive Manufacturing as the industrial method for prototyping and manufacturing for various industrial sectors. The module introduces the basic aspects of additive manufacturing of metals and polymers with respect to the possibilities and limitations of the specific AM technologies and product requirements. The module also covers a wide range of examples and applications from both lectures and supplementary learning materials to illustrate the potential of AM technology as a manufacturing method.

Learning objectives

Describe generic attributes of AM in relation to other manufacturing technologies.
Describe basic principles of seven main categories of AM technologies.
Describe the main processes for AM and their capabilities and limitations.
Describe technical limitations/product realization capabilities when applying AM technology as a manufacturing method.


Module structure

This module begins with a welcome video introducing the tutors of this module followed by a virtual guided tour of Fablab showcasing various digital technologies and innovations at Halmstad University. Furthermore, the main categories of AM technologies, their basic principles, possibilities, and limitations are described briefly. Finally, the module ends with a short evaluation focused on continuous module improvement.
 
The AM module is based on a set of recorded lectures supported by additional videos and self-study materials along with recommended references, quizzes, and reflection assignments. The module is also designed to include webinars for live interactions with tutors encouraging discussions and Q&As.

Time commitment

You will be onboarded to the learning portal as soon as your registration process is completed. This module take about 20 hours to complete. Webinars are included throught the semester, where you can engage in deeper discussions on selected topics, together with teachers and co-learners.
