Ingenjör5.0: Skills needed for Sweden’s Future Manufacturing

Written by Asli Ayhan Kavukcu | Dec 3, 2025 1:05:50 PM

Sweden’s path toward net-zero emissions and a resilient, globally competitive industry depends on more than technological breakthroughs, it relies on the people who design, develop, and implement them. Skilled engineers are at the heart of creating the factories, products, and systems of the future.

With renewed long-term funding, the national initiative Ingenjör5.0 is now positioned to make an even greater impact on that transformation.

Continued Funding to Power National Upskilling

Ingenjör5.0 has received renewed backing through the Net Zero Industry initiative, part of the Impact Innovation program led by Vinnova, Formas, and the Swedish Energy Agency. With funding secured through 2028, the initiative can continue expanding its important work, helping companies across Sweden strengthen the skills needed for a future-ready, sustainable industry.

“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to keep developing Ingenjör5.0 to strengthen Sweden’s engineering competence,” says Bengt-Göran Rosén, professor at Halmstad University and project manager for the initiative. “Now, we look forward to continuing our work with upskilling for future manufacturing, supporting Swedish industry in achieving net zero emissions and long-term resilience.”

High-Quality Learning – Short, Digital, Expert-Led

At the core of Ingenjör4.0 is a portfolio of short, web-based learning modules created in collaboration with 13 Swedish universities. These expert-level modules are designed specifically for professional engineers who want to deepen or broaden their competencies to meet the demands of future manufacturing.

This autumn, participants could choose among tens of different modules, covering a wide range of topics from AI applied in technical environments to strategies for designing products that rely on critical raw materials. The goal is to empower engineers with expertise that drives innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness.

Building on the Success of Ingenjör4.0

Ingenjör5.0 builds upon and significantly expands the foundation laid by Ingenjör4.0, an earlier large-scale upskilling initiative developed by the Swedish Production Academy within the strategic innovation program Produktion2030.

Launched in 2020, Ingenjör4.0 offered a unique learning opportunity tailored for industry professionals seeking to strengthen advanced digital and production-related skills. Engineers from well-known companies including Volvo, SKF, and AFRY have participated in this program, benefiting from its focus on lifelong learning and cutting-edge competencies.

Both Ingenjör4.0 and Ingenjör5.0 share a common mission: to address critical skills gaps, promote continuous professional development, and ensure that Sweden remains a world leader in sustainable manufacturing and industrial innovation.

Empowering the Workforce for a Net-Zero Future

With fresh funding and an expanding selection of high-quality courses, Ingenjör5.0 is well placed to help speed up Sweden’s shift toward a net-zero, resilient, and more technologically advanced industry. By giving engineers the skills they need to grow and succeed, the initiative supports both individual career development and the long-term strength and sustainability of Sweden’s manufacturing sector.
